하루는 아홉 살이던 2011년, 동일본 대지진으로 발생한 쓰나미에 부모님과 남동생을 잃고 혼자가 되었다. 이후 하루는 고향인 이와테 현 오츠치를 떠나 히로시마 현의 구레에서 숙모와 단 둘이 산다. 어느 날 숙모가 쓰러져 의식불명 상태가 되자 하루는 다시 혼자가 된다. 이제 하루는 무작정 고향을 향해 길을 나선다.
